[TRACK REVIEW] ‘By Myself’ - Maya Hawke

RELEASE DATE: 18 MAR 2020 GENRE: COUNTRY / INDIE POP LABEL: MOM + POP God, am I a sucker for great songs about obsessive love. Especially, to quote Maya Hawke’s interview on Pitchfork, when “...[the track is] about projecting ideas you have about yourself onto other people”. The projection here is pretty violent, with a lot of self-flagellation (“I’m beating up myself”), so to hear the musical arrangement (by Jesse Harris) come off so beautifully to complement Maya’s words is an enthralling experience by itself. Maya singing “I prefer my dreams of you” feels like a self-effacing knife to the throat of her fantasy object of adulation. Straight from her upcoming debut album, Blush, (coming out 19 June 2020), here we see the actress-singer-songwriter take a more solidly country route in comparison to her other songs like To Love A Boy or Stay Open. There’s nothing wrong with that at all as she pulls it off with casual flair, but Maya Hawke is still just short of really finding her own sound as of now. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to hearing the studio album version of this song she performed (still untitled). That sounds like her at her best! Track listing for ‘Blush’: 01 Coverage
