Toronto jazz band, BADBADNOTGOOD, slow things down in these peace-of-mind offerings.
RELEASE DATE: 28 APR 2020 GENRE: JAZZ
'Goodbye Blue' is a gorgeous, minimal jazz track with a soft bass clarinet texture. Jonah Yano's vocals blend in beautifully as he sings about being "bound to run". The way he sings "Tu es le Bleu dans ma vie (You are the blue in my life) with a serene, resigned demeanor infuses this song with all the sunset glow your soul needs. The crescendo around the second minute is blissful too, as Jonah Yano's voice climbs together with the bass clarinet and guitar. The track is more meditative than assertive however, and lacks a bit of the instrumental prowess that you can find in previous BADBADNOTGOOD projects - but it does what it needs to do, even if it's a little too skeletal. RATING:
4/5

In the second part, the percussive element feels more prominent. The drums are spectacular and inspired, but it blends in pretty fast to a lot of BADBADNOTGOOD's previous with nothing much added. The bass clarinet and horns save the day again though, ripping through the cliche with an immersive soundscape - bridging all the instruments together like a vaunted ceiling.

3 / 5
