[TRACK REVIEW] 'The Leader of the Delinquents' - Kid Cudi

Kid Cudi’s latest single is the rapper’s return to basics.

RELEASE DATE: 13 APR 2020 GENRE: HIP HOP If you’re a follower of Kid Cudi’s music, you must be aware that his discography isn’t exactly smooth-sailing to a lot of people. Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven gets panned heavily by critics and fans alike, but his Man on the Moon series, Passion, Pain and Demon Slayin’ and Kids See Ghost have maintained Kid Cudi as a significant cultural influence with still a lot to give. There’s a lot of careful hesitation into going in to listen to his latest single, ‘The Leader of the Delinquents’, but at the end of it all, it’s an okay cut that serves as a cool preview to Kid Cudi’s chops. The song has a boom bap feel to it, a simple beat for Cudi’s accounting of his life & struggles so far, sticking to the type of honesty that brings a lot of younger rappers to his altar back in the day, wrapping around topics of depression and loneliness. The flow is pretty straightforward but effective. It even has that old school aesthetic that goes well with the boom bap. The harmonization of his hums, keys, and strings throughout adds a lot of nuance to the song’s production. Although, to me, there aren’t any standout bars or firey turn of phrases here, it’s a decent Kid Cudi song overall. RATING: 3 / 5
